When my baby boy was born, I was in awe of his tiny fingers, soft skin, and—most surprisingly—his bright blue eyes. My husband and I both have brown eyes, so I couldn’t help but wonder: where did those piercing blue eyes come from?

Curious about why this happened, I did some research and discovered that eye color is determined by genetics, but newborns often appear to have blue eyes because of a fascinating scientific reason.

The colored part of the eye, called the iris, gets its hue from a pigment known as melanin—the same pigment responsible for skin and hair color. However, at birth, a baby’s body has not yet produced much melanin in the iris, making the eyes look blue. This is because blue eyes are not truly blue due to pigment, but rather due to the way light scatters inside the iris, just like how the sky appears blue.

As babies grow, their melanocytes (the cells that produce melanin) become more active. If a child has genes that encourage more melanin production, their eyes will darken over time, often turning brown, green, or hazel. However, if they inherit genes for low melanin production, their blue eyes may remain throughout life.

As I looked into my baby’s eyes, I knew that their unique color was more than just a physical trait – it was a part of his identity. The way his eyes sparkled with curiosity, the way they crinkled at the corners when he smiled, it all came together to make him uniquely him.

Witnessing the transformation of his eye color was a reminder that genetics is an intricate, fascinating process that shapes who we are. And as I gazed into my baby’s beautiful brown eyes, I knew that I was grateful to be a part of this journey with him.
