Curious about why this happened, I did some research and discovered that eye color is determined by genetics, but newborns often appear to have blue eyes because of a fascinating scientific reason.
The colored part of the eye, called the iris, gets its hue from a pigment known as melaninโthe same pigment responsible for skin and hair color. However, at birth, a baby’s body has not yet produced much melanin in the iris, making the eyes look blue. This is because blue eyes are not truly blue due to pigment, but rather due to the way light scatters inside the iris, just like how the sky appears blue.
As babies grow, their melanocytes (the cells that produce melanin) become more active. If a child has genes that encourage more melanin production, their eyes will darken over time, often turning brown, green, or hazel. However, if they inherit genes for low melanin production, their blue eyes may remain throughout life.
